Iím new to this board Ė in fact Iím really kind of new to cycling. I think I might have gotten in over my head and I need some advice. My friends talked me into signing up for a 5 day 700 mile ride in July. Iíve never ridden more than 25 miles in a day before. Any training, equipment tips or other advice for a newbie like me? Thanks

Welcome to the jungle, George. lol couldnít resist.

Get your bike to your lbs for a tune up and a fitting. If your bikeís not fit properly it can cause injuries or will at least be really uncomfortable on longer rides. Good shorts or pants with adequate padding are a must. And build up the mileage slowly.

Hey George,

Make sure you have quality shoes, new cleats and good pedals. Comfortable, moisture wicking clothing is essential, you need to keep dry to prevent chafing. Shave your legs and use Body Glide any place you might feel friction. Buy a good helmet and sunglasses and be sure to have enough hydration.

Thanks for the input. What does lbs mean? Are there any good online training plans on how to build mileage? How do I know if my bike is fitted properly? How much hydration do I need? Why do I have to shave my legs? Sorry if Iím being a pest.

LBS is your local bike shop and they should be able to help you with most of your issues. You might also check into any bike clubs in your area, they can help you with training, hydration, nutrition and other questions you may have. And you donít have to shave your legs, but if you donít you might be pulling hair from a scabbed roadrash on your backside if you bite the dust.

Ah, got it. Never thought of that.

This is probably a strange question coming from a guy, but I need to know the best way to shave my legs. Is electric better than a razor? Are there any dos and doníts? Thanks.

Welcome to the jungle, George Ė lol, couldnít help myself.

IMHO, blades are better than electric. Try using a trimmer to shorten the hair before you shave. Make sure you use a moisturizing soap or good shave gel and a sharp blade.

You going to post a video? Or at least pictures?

Waxing :-) Especially a bikini wax ;-)

If you soak in a hot bath for a while it softens the hair and makes shaving more comfortable. Use long smooth strokes when shaving and keep the blade clean. Make sure to use some lotion afterwards to make your legs silky smooth. And if youíre waxing, make sure to post a video, I love hearing guys scream.

Thanks. Can I use my regular razor, or should I buy one meant for legs? How often will I need to shave? And I think Iíll pass on the waxing, I have a low tolerance to pain.

Any razor should do as long as you use new blades. As far as how often, that depends on how smooth you want your legs to be.

What is the best way to stop nicks and cuts from bleeding? And how do I know if maybe I clipped an artery or something? There seems to be a lot of blood!

LOL! Great example of an on-line forum. Very creative.

Hilarious! Very, very well done!

This should carry an emotional health warning. Uuuurrgh, can't get that hideous image out of my head of a man trying to shave his legs. Aaaaagh!!!
Aside from that, brilliant, creative, and a warning to all sane blokes never to take up cycling!

This is just too funny! I was laughing so hard I need to find moisture resistant shorts myself! This is great. All of my kids are swimmers and apparently you swim faster if you don't shave all season until the big race and then you shave everything. Your story brought many mental pictures of botched shaving jobs! Lyd still has a 3 inch mark on her arm from last week! Great story, I'm sure it will do well!

What a riot! :) I was glad you explained what LBS was too. :) I enjoyed seeing the name "Pam" in this. :) Has George heard of Iowa's RAGBRAI? You have a lot of smiles in this!
Mona Purvis11/13/10
You get high marks from me on this one. Well done! Good humor. On topic. Just splendid.

Very fun and creative look at "forums." Maybe George should go back to swinging on vines. It sounds a lot safer. God bless your writing.
Barbara Lynn Culler11/17/10
Awesome job! Love the inuendos in some of the responses, and especially the rose symbol.
Loren T. Lowery11/17/10
This is soooo funny. And not a hint of being phony. A real guy asking an honest question that keeps going and going and going. It reminded me a bit of my swimming competition when we were asked to shave to cut down of the friction in the water.
Great job!
Amanda Brogan11/18/10
ROFL!!! ;) This is way hilarious! I didn't see the forum changing coming, love how his problems get advanced each time. :)

This reminds me of your story for the Critique/Review topic. Classic Tim humor. ;)

VERY WELL DESERVED WINS! Congrats, George. ;)
