Gossip and Rumor and Truthful
Went fishing to test-drive a boat.
Each man wore a vest
That was L.L. Bean’s best;
If needed, it’d keep them afloat.
They’d all brought their bait and their coolers
And fished ‘til the daylight was gone.
They caught some nice trout
Which made them all shout,
“Let’s stay here and fish until dawn!”
They pulled up to shore and unloaded,
Then gathered some wood for a fire.
They fried all their fish
And they all made a wish
That each had brought warmer attire.
They talked through the night about subjects
That all of them seemed to enjoy.
Each spoke of their wives
And the kids in their lives
And the fun each man had as a boy.
The fishing trip ended at daybreak.
They all said how great it had been.
They said they would tell
Everything had been swell
And why they should do it again.
The first one to reach home was Gossip.
He told his wife things that were bad;
That one of the guys
With stars in his eyes
Named all the affairs that he’d had.
The next to report home was Rumor.
He told his wife, “Wow! On this trip
One man said his pastor
Was such a disaster
He kept whiskey near for a sip."
The last man who reached home was Truthful.
He said that he liked his new friends.
And that their conversation
Was a real inspiration
Would he go again? It depends.

Whenever you hear someone gossip
Of something you know is not true,
Don’t repeat what they said,
Just forget it instead;
Or next time it might be about you.
