You wonder why he does not cry,
He never sheds a tear,
He tried it once upon a time,
It fell on careless ears.
You wonder if the hugs you give,
Will ever be returned,
The comfort of a warm embrace,
He still has yet to learn.
You wonder when you’ll catch a glimpse,
Of a precious little grin,
He’s never had a feeling,
Like happiness within.
You wonder if those lifeless eyes,
Will ever make contact,
The months spent lying in a crib,
Gave no chance to interact.
You wonder if you’ll gain the trust,
To hold an outstretched hand,
No one was there to guide him,
He does not understand.
You wonder if you’ll ever hear,
A cry for Mommy in the night,
He’s developed his own way,
To deal with fear and fright.
You wonder if you’ve touched his heart,
Or if your efforts are in vain,
Although he may not show it yet,
He has been forever changed.
