I shed tears on the day you were born.
In the same moment that your father picked you up
I whispered,
“ Bon voyage,”
in your tiny little ear.
Did you hear me then?
You set sail on your lifetime trip.
It was no pleasure cruise.
The waters were consistently rough and stormy, and
there was no porthole to see your destination - just one blank wall to stare at.
I know.
I was with you as each ache of
loneliness
and rejection
lacerated
your
soul.
I walked with you.
I sat with you.
I ached with you and
cried with you.
Your deeper joy was within reach, yet you did not know me
then.
For you my child, your joy was not in the journey.
I know.
But your joy was in the arrival.
I shed tears of joy on the day you were reborn.
I picked you up and held you so close ....
I shouted,
“WELCOME HOME!”
in your rather large ear, and
I know
you heard me then.
Let’s set sail now,
you and I.
Let me warn you before we go: the waters will not always be smooth and
you will not always be able to see your destination,
but I can.
Your heart may hurt again from time to time, but
my balm soothes like no other.
I am your ship, and
this vast ocean awaits
us.
It’s going to be OK now.
