We line ourselves in boxes
Like ivory figurines,
Prepared, in perfect patterns,
To have our faces cleaned.
We build our stain glass sepulchers,
That God might hear our pleas,
To wash us in the perfect rhythm
That synchronized our creeds.
But all our rigid structures
Provide the perfect mute;
Our incantations drown the sound
Of Heaven’s sweetest flutes!
We line ourselves in boxes
Like ivory figurines,
While God is singing ballads
And offers us His wings;
We jail ourselves in sepulchers
And wail our mournful dirge,
While oceans gush with ecstasy
And we may surf the surge!
In all our rigid structures
We miss the chance to fly,
God longs to come and dance with us
In the ballroom of the sky;
We line ourselves in boxes,
A reflex born of fear,
While God is offering joy untold
If we but choose to hear.
