Soft beams of romantic moonlight filtered through the bedroom window. Todd lightly touched his wife’s hair with a tenderness that even surprised him. Kim’s eyes reflected the moonlight as she turned to her loving husband, ready to share whatever wonderful moments were to come. Todd knew the next moment hinged not on the moonlight, nor even his heartfelt delicate touch. The true love in his heart now demanded the temporary sacrifice of his words. He knew, though, that those words must be for her, not him.
“Did you finally get anything new written on your book, Honey?” He smiled lovingly and wondered why Kim rolled over with a slight ‘huff’. “You’ve been fighting that so-called writer’s block of yours for a month now. What’s the deal?”
“Is that really what’s on your mind, Todd?”
“Nope. Not really. I just thought I’d be considerate and talk about something you’re interested in.” Todd saw the frown that was trying to force its way onto Kim’s face. “Uh, did I say something wrong?”
“No, Dear. Let’s just get some sleep. Okay?” She couldn’t believe she was saying this. “I’m really tired.”
She took her tuck-legged, ‘I’m asleep’ position and wiped an unexpected tear from her eye. What was that man thinking? she thought. Will he never learn?
She pulled her feather pillow close to her cheek and listened to every sound coming from Todd’s side of the bed. Though her eyes were closed, her heart still saw the moonlight; still felt his fingers in her hair. The man was, in every sense of the word, male. He knew nothing about women. What a shame, because he had come so close, so very, very close, to being the inspiration she needed to once again put words on paper.
Kim’s book had gone stale at the most awkward place imaginable. The MC and her hubby had gone sailing with friends for the weekend but an unexpected storm had driven them off course and stranded them on a deserted tropical isle. Very romantic. She could visualize this night’s moonlight and Todd’s wonderful soft touch and almost wanted to jump out of bed to start writing. The MC’s husband, though, would probably end up just like Todd. Honey, would you like for me to fix the boat right now? Yeah, that’s probably what he would say.
She decided to make the next move in trying to rekindle the mood that Todd had mutilated. Turning once again to face him, she smiled softly and whispered “Darling, isn’t the moonlight beautiful tonight?”
“Only because it shines on you.”
Now you’re talking right! she thought. “Oh, you are such a Rudolf Valentino, Dear.” She moved her face slowly toward his and prepared to meet his wonderful lips. This was the moment that would light fires. His lips drew nearer, nearer until finally…..
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Kim. Let me grab some tissues for you.”
He is hopeless. She turned away again, this time without a tear in her eye. Her anger must have burned the tear up before it reached her cheek. The pillow once again found its way to her face, this time, though, to cover it from sight.
“Honey?” Todd’s voice sounded pitifully apologetic.
“What do you want now?”
“I love you.”
It was that simple. Just ‘I love you’. Oh, but bells rang when he said it. He loves me. she thought. He really does love me. Maybe there is hope for an inspirationally romantic evening after all. She placed the pillow aside and once again turned to face her lover. She could tell by his eyes that he was searching for just the right words to totally captivate the mood. Long seconds passed without a word being uttered. Poor man, should she help him out?
Finally, he took a deep breath and sighed “I’m sorry for messing up tonight. Sometimes I just say the wrong things.”
“That’s alright, Honey.” She smiled as seductive a smile as she could muster. “I just had other things on my mind.” If that doesn’t get the right response she thought, nothing will.
“What DO you want to talk about?”
Without even attaching emotion to it, she could think of only one response.
“Just fix the boat.”
She rolled over to her own side of the bed again, almost amused at the bewildered look on Todd’s face. At least she knew she would be able to write again.
For better or worse, Todd WAS her inspiration.
