Words of death. . .
Vicious, malicious,
Cunning and cold--
Words can be weapons
To young and to old.

Whether written or spoken,
words can inflict more hurt and pain
than the stab of a sharpened knife.
Their ugly wounds cut deep into beating hearts,
visible only to those
who take the time to care.
In the wake of toxic words
a victim gasps for fresh air,
aching for the soothing balm of soft expressions.

The slobbering, slurring oration
tortured the victim’s mind,
shriveling lost hopes like poisoned weeds.
No escape from this jail--
the walls constructed of verbal cement
tether the inmate to a life of death.
Sinister smirks disguised as smiling lips
await unsuspecting prey as the trap is set--
snap! Now the malicious cackling.

Defeating, cheating,
Deadly and deceiving--
Words are his weapons
To all those receiving.

Words of Life. . .
Beautifully baring,
Lovingly caring,
Words can be blessings
Especially in sharing.

Have you ever penned a grateful note
That brightened someone’s life,
Or scripted words of sweet caress
To your husband or your wife.

And maybe on a sunny day
A friend walked through your mind,
You paused to say a prayer of thanks--
So glad your lives entwined.

Have you received a cheery note
That helped to make you smile,
Or opened up a silly card
From one who knows your style.

The tangible put-on-paper words
Can touch so tenderly,
Expressions of our inner selves
For other eyes to see.

And we’ve been given daily words
To help us learn and grow,
From One who died an ugly death
Because He loved us so.

So true. Few people truly understand how powerful words can be.

I really liked this line:
the walls constructed of verbal cement
tether the inmate to a life of death.

What a creative (and perfect) title! You've used excellent (and strong) words in this free verse/rhyming poem. Excellent creativity Charla!
