"Let’s build a little house for us",
Tom said to his wee wife,
"We’ll make it just as we could wish,
to last us all our life."

And so on checkered paper clean
they drew their dream-filled plan,
with all they needed, even more
to cheer the heart of man.

There'd be three rooms for sleeping time,
and one for daytime fun,
and space to entertain the guests,
a room filled with warm sun.

The plans were passed, the builder came,
along with noise and mess
and piles of dust, from morn to night -
Tom’s wife said, "Hmph – such stress!"

And so the days turned into weeks,
and weeks then months became,
the noise and mess continued strong,
poor wifey felt the strain.

But finally the work was done,
they stood within the hall,
and Tom said to his little wife,
"Look dear, 'twas worth it all."

For such is life, along the way
there’s many a "hmph" of pain,
but in the end the final shout
will be of glorious gain.
