A frown in your heart shapes a mumble to start
When things are not going your way;
Then those thoughts give place to a look on your face
That shows what you’re begging to say!
Soon the little pet peeve has started to seethe
And the niggle’s begun to explore
All the ways you’re affected - you’ve never detected -
So now you hurt even more.
Then murmurings flow in words that will grow
Into fully fledged phrases of pain,
As you make your thoughts known by the seeds that you’ve sown
‘Till others can feel your disdain.
Soon anger’s afire; your voice rises higher
Your heart belches forth its complaint -
And words thrown like darts reach innermost parts
That show you’re much less than a saint!
But a small voice is heard with a very stern word
From somewhere deep down in your heart -
“Don’t let anger control; keep watch o’er your soul -
Lest it tears your whole spirit apart.
“For mumbles, though small, hardly heard of at all,
Will grow if not nipped in the bud;
And cause you to fail like the kids of Israel
Whose complaints poured forth like a flood.
"For though they were saved, they continually raved
‘Bout the water, the food and the foe;
And to pay for their strife they forfeited life
In the land they were destined to go.
"So don’t be a fool, just keep your head cool -
Cast your cares upon Him who is Lord;
Your burdens He’ll take for His own name’s sake -
His peace will be your reward.”
