In general, people tend to hear very well…mainly because they have ears. But, hearing and listening are too incredibly different realities. It is possible for a person to hear, yet not listen.
The human race, having been created as social beings in a communal world, simply cannot afford to lose the ability to truly listen to another individual. A healthy community is rooted in solid communication and solid communication is rooted in listening…real listening.
Now, despite the diminishing number of skilled listeners, I do believe there is still hope of regaining what has been lost. However, it will not be easy because, although listening is a skill that can be learned, it remains only a shell if the listener has not first achieved some level of humility.
You see, to listen...to really listen, is to first become willing to embrace another. And that’s where the main problem lies. People simply are too selfish to listen. What do you think about that?”
“I’m sorry? I wasn’t listening.”
“Be quick to listen, slow to speak…” James 1:19 (NIV)
