“Ahhhhhh, rest, blessed rest.”
“Yah, but…”
“Yah, but what, Mike?”
“She didn’t drink much water today and you know what that means.”
“Does coffee count?”
“Morris, you know perfectly well that it doesn’t. In fact, it probably makes things worse. It has to be real 100% water, without additives.”
“You know how I HATE when this happens. When will she ever learn? Eight glasses. I’d even settle for six.”
"Then there’s that pill.”
“What? You mean for her blood pressure? True. Added to being dehydrated from not drinking enough water, the diuretic doesn’t help us at all.”
“Did you check with the guys down at her feet?”
“What for?”
“Well, I know they are sensitive about this, but if Archie and Arthur are feeling a little flat, that complicates life for us too.”
“No kidding!”
“She’s been running around today, moving furniture and sorting through stuff. Those concrete floors are murder…”
“…Not to mention the sidewalks. She went out to pay some bills this afternoon…”
“…and got more dehydrated, right? Boy, are we going to be in trouble tonight. Mind you, it wouldn’t make too much difference anyway. If she hadn’t been running around she’d have been sitting in front of the computer all day. That’s just as bad.”
“You don’t think she’ll sleep on her back tonight? That would help. The fetal position can be an issue. You know, legs all twisted up and one resting on top of the other. It makes me very nervous cause I know what’s coming.”
“I don’t think she will. You know Stitch makes her uncomfortable and she likes to squish him under her so that he won’t hurt so much.”
“What is that Stitch up to, anyway?”
“No idea, but he keeps her sleeping on her side.”
“Did you ask Sam if our girl had her banana today? Gotta have that potassium, you know—for our sakes, and for Bobby’s.”
“I didn’t ask, but I know she had milk on her cereal this morning. Calcium’s good too.”
“How do you know she had milk on her cereal?”
“Toby told me, and he got it from Martha who’s on the leading edge as it were.”
“I think we should prepare for the inevitable. I’m not sure that little bit of calcium’s gonna do it. It could be a rough night. Too bad she’s such a wimp.”
“Wimp? That’s not nice.”
“Not nice, but still true. When it happens she just cries out in pain and rubs. Good thing no one can see her lying there on her back with her leg in the air rubbing like mad and yelling.”
“What? You got some kind of objection to a nice massage?”
“I wouldn’t object if it worked better. She needs to get herself out of bed and walk around.”
“That’s a stretch—for us, I mean. I think I like either the massage or the stretch better than I like the cold ice pack treatment.”
“B-r-r-r-r-r-r, that makes me shiver just to think about it. A hot shower would be better except that we’ll never get either unless she sleeps beside the freezer or in the shower. She’s afraid to get out of bed because of the pain.”
“Maybe we’ll get lucky and it won’t happen tonight. I’m tired.”
“Me too, but that’s just when it’s likely to happen. Mike, I hate to tell you this, but…?”
“What?”
“INCOMING!”
“No, not now!”
“Yup, it’s Charley horse.”
“OW!”
