It seems like only yesterday
you were just a
blossom on the vine
so full of promise. . .
Day by day you grew from
a tiny green knob
to a plump, round pumpkin
covered in resplendent orange skin
glowing in the sunlight
eagerly awaiting small
hands to discover your beauty. . .
How proud you were
the day you were chosen
over all the others and
lovingly carried home. . .
How you laughed when you heard
the squeals of delight as
small hands removed
slimy masses of seeds
some for roasting
some for planting. . .
Ooh’s and aah’s as the
candle was lit and
light spilled out from
triangulated eyes and
a lopsided grin.
How quickly time passes. . .
After a time the candle
was no longer lit
your face, dark and empty,
no longer glowed with
an inner light, yet
still you sat
bravely smiling
still bringing an
occasional smile to passers-by.
How quickly time passes. . .
Too soon your once proud
orange plumpness
became shriveled with age
your brilliant smile
caved in like an
old man without his dentures
your eyes sunken and
rimmed with black tears. . .
Your beautiful orange life
has come to an end. . .
But don’t despair
don’t grieve for lost beauty
and youth, you gave joy
you brought happiness and
brightened a dark night
with your cheerful, orange-tinged light
come spring, your legacy
will live on as your
children are planted and
life begins again.
