“Pregnant? Are you sure?” I asked the doctor.
“Positive!” the doctor answered.
My husband and I had three children and were surprised to discover that we would be having a new arrival in mid-November.
“There is one problem. We have found pre-cancerous cells……. You have Stage 4 and the next stage, Stage 5, is cancer. There is only one thing you can do. You must have an abortion immediately so we can begin treatment.”
I was in utter shock. The news of the pregnancy had barely sunk in, but then to have my doctor suggest an abortion sent me reeling.
“You can go home and visit with your husband about it. Then, I will call you tomorrow. I cannot express to you how urgent it is for you to terminate this pregnancy and us to begin an aggressive regime. If you don’t, your three children will not have a mother.”
Dazed I walked to my car. The doctor’s words haunted me. For the past ten years I had been an advocate for the RIGHT TO LIFE. Now, here I was facing the most difficult decision of my entire existence. I reached home and distracted our three children with a favorite video. My husband and I went into another room as I collapsed in his muscular arms. I told him all the doctor had said.
“Honey, this is too big for us. Let’s find Jesus! He will show us what to do!” my husband, Paul, said as he cried out to the Lord.
After praying we began to sing softly,
“Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong.
They are weak but He is strong.
Yes, JESUS loves me.
Yes, JESUS loves me.
Yes, JESUS loves me.
The Bible tells me so.”
In that moment JESUS spoke, “Peace be still!” to our raging storm.
“I’m going to pack a little suitcase in faith for our baby.” I whimpered.
“We’ll go tonight and buy a pretty piece of luggage and fill it with all sort of things for our baby.” Paul replied.
“What will we tell the doctor?” I asked.
“Don’t you worry! I will handle it. I’ll tell him that we feel we need a specialist who is for the life of the mother and the life of the baby. A doctor who will keep a close eye on you and yet we’ll fight for our baby’s life, too.” My husband said confidently.

Every week my husband and I would find some little treasure to add to our little “faith” suitcase.
God led us to a doctor that was sympathetic to our convictions. He ran several biopsies throughout my pregnancy to see if there was any cancer present. Fortunately, it remained Stage 4 throughout the entire pregnancy.
I would stand over that little suitcase of hope with one hand on my swollen tummy and whisper a prayer, “This baby is yours, Lord! Keep this baby safe!”
The long wait was finally over and on November 18th God gave us a beautiful baby girl, Elizabeth Lois. She weighed in at exactly 7 pounds.
I will never forget the day God led us to prepare a "faith" suitcase" for our little bundle from Heaven.
The doctor said not only did we save our baby's life, but she had saved mine. If I hadn't become pregnant I might not have gone to the doctor and they discovered the pre-cancerous cells. To God be the glory!

Elizabeth “Libby” Lois is soon to be 17 years old. She is a junior and team captain of her volleyball team at Lighthouse Academy. She feels a call to missions.
After Libby’s birth the doctor performed surgery and the pre-cancerous cells have not returned.
