A Fisher of Men

Iíll tell you Ned
he was a funny sight
Flyfishing that stream
with all his might.

An Ichabod crane-like
slender fellow,
wearing a brim down hat
of sunset yellow.

Amber Polaroidís precariously
rode on his nose,
yellow wading boots
encased his toes.

A yellow rain slicker
covered his body,
hiding a canteen
of hot coffee toddy.

Wielding his rod with
confident flair,
yellow braid line
dancing in the air.

When the cast stalled
and the line went limp.
Tied to the tippet was
a yellow nymph.

The strike indicator,
surely you know,
Pinched on the line
gave a yellow glow.

Drifting in the current
past a yellow clay bank,
bobbing thrice before
it sank.

Sucked under by
a fishy rascal,
About to test
the fishermanís tackle.

With a hoop and a holler
he began to sing,
The Yellow Rose of Texas
echoing down the stream.

Reeling the fish closer
he gave a lurch,
Pulling from the stream a
yellow-fin perch.

One more was needed,
let there be no mistake.
Five loaves of bread
he had already baked.

Itís symbolic, of course,
he would tell his class,
Praying the real message
touched lad and lass.
