Red unites. No matter the color of our skin, the shape of our bodies, the thoughts in our heads, the language of our tongues, we all share a highly complex system designed to move red liquid around our bodies. It is the one color that accompanies us into the world and fades as we leave it.
Red, it turns out is everywhere: in the red, a red letter day, seeing red, red-faced, caught red-handed, red herring, cutting through red tape, walking the red carpet, Little Red Riding Hood, painting the town red.
Scarlet, crimson, garnet, rouge, carmine, ruby, cherry. It bonds mother to child while they are still one. Nourishment, breath, peace or stress, all joined by the pulsing, pounding red blood flowing along a satin cord. Red is the color of happiness, of romance, of rage. And it’s the color of sacrifice. A mother’s for her unborn child. Our Father’s for his son. Red drops of love trickled on hard packed dirt streets. From sharp points of vine pressed into a delicate face. Red is sacrifice and love, and the idea that we are all made for something more than this black and white world.
