When I was five…I wanted to fly,
In a boat, in the sky.
Up to the heavens where God’s kids hang,
Talking with Noah & Jonah and the gang!
I’d steer my boat to the pearly gates,
Knock on the door, wondering if I were too late!
But, lo and behold, the gates opened wide,
And me and my boat just puttered on by!
I saw Jesus waving with a big ole grin,
I yelled, “Hey, Mr. Jesus, want to take a spin?”
He hopped in the boat and with a shift in gears,
We took off…with His hands over His ears.
I’m talked rather loudly…you know Jesus is old,
Asking where to turn onto the streets of gold.
Jesus kept grinning and pointed to the right,
And goodness the gold was an amazing sight!
The colors sparkled everywhere in my eyes,
And the people I saw just glowed passing us by.
Oh! And there in the corner, next to flowers I’d never seen,
Was Noah taking a nap and enjoying a dream.
“Hey, Mr. Jesus,” I yelled, “could I see the whale that Jonah sat in?
And the huge ark that became the ‘animals den’?
I’d love to meet David and see his sling-shot up close,
And what happened to the three guys in the furnace that almost became toast?”
Jesus started telling me stories…some I’ve never heard,
He says as I get older I’ll understand His Holy Word.
We sailed over the oceans and saw the whale that Jonah sat in,
We climbed in the ark and imagined how smelly it must have been!
Then we flew off the water into the coolest blue sky,
And we saw Gabriel the angel hovering nearby!
Then—I nearly fell out when David I saw,
Putting rocks in his sling-shot and having a ball!
Jesus said, “Do you want to play awhile?”
“You bet I do!” I said as I eyed the rocks all in a pile.
Then Jesus said, “David, this is my special friend visiting for the day,
Would you show how you defeated Goliath in your own unique way?”
Oh boy! This is awesome to have David to myself,
So he answered all my questions, probably wishing he had help!
Then David showed me how he took the stone and placed it in the sling shot,
Swung it around his head, towards a huge, huge tree top.
Down, down, down, came the tree and landed at our feet,
I looked up at David and said, “Could you teach me to defeat?”
“Absolutely, but a sling-shot you do not need,
On earth your weapon is God’s Word, the Bible you should read!”
About this time, Jesus came back through the sky,
We hopped in my boat and I waved goodbye.
Jesus patted my head and asked, “Did you have a great time?”
“THE BEST,” I said and my face was all a shine!
“Excellent,” said Jesus and with a wink we’re on our way,
Back to the pearly gates where we met earlier that day.
“I had so much fun, Mr. Jesus; I would really like to stay.”
But He said, “Son, you’ll be here soon – you’ll see,
Until then…tell ALL your friends about me!”
So with hugs and a kiss, I waved good bye,
And headed home, in my boat, in the sky…
As I landed in my backyard, next to a huge, huge tree,
I felt in my back pocket a sling-shot David gave to me.
It reminds me what to do when I come up against sin,
Call out to Jesus…you see He’s my weapon and He’s my friend!
Author’s note: A whimsical take on my little son’s comment – “Mom, could we sail a boat to heaven and meet Jesus?” so from his childhood imagination to mine this came to be.
