Deep in the soil, sleepy plants felt the first warming rays of the sun penetrate their earthen bed and awoke to begin their journey to the surface and much-awaited freedom.
Above ground, the wind moaned and shook the trees in defiance, trying to dislodge the new leaves, but except for a few which had appeared before time, they clung tenaciously to their branches. Easing to a gentle breeze, the wind changed its line of attack and dipped and swirled in eddies amongst the early spring flowers but was again defeated, as the flowers mocked him and bowed together for strength.
The wind knew its winter power was almost gone, and with a roar shot skyward through the nearby Liquid Amber dislodging a newly formed nest, still empty of eggs, and earned a chattering rebuke from a Mother Robin.
“Be still, Wind of Winter,” she chirped. “Why are so you discontent? You have had your time to play. For three long months you have roamed the land freely and now it is your sister’s turn.”
“Thank you, dear little friend,” a gentle breeze sighed, as it caressed the Robin’s feathers.
“But you are no more than a zephyr.” Winter wind moaned. “A small single breeze.”
“I am part of the whole. Just like the warm sun, the gentle rain, the flowers you see beginning to peek from beneath the earth, yes, and even the gentle robin here, who seeks to build her nest. Soon there will be much more – colour and life, butterflies and even the laughter of children. All part of the whole that the creator has given man. The warming time of the year when man forgets the bitter cold and smiles as Spring once more spreads her mantle over the earth.”
