She walks quietly in and stands against the wall
Of all the things that must be done
Before school comes to an end, and tempts us
To waste the time that we know we should spend
On the task at hand--
Is it warm enough yet to walk barefoot in the sand?
Is the sun shining today?
May we go outside and play?
Why should we have to stay in here?
There’s so much more to do…
Why even stay and finish the review?
We know this stuff--
Let’s go out now and read--
She knows exactly which hunger to feed.
For we want to sample of her wares,
Put down our burdens and forget our cares.
We want to dance with Summer, to feel
Her rhythm in our feet.
We want to feel the music--
We even want the heat…
So we step onto the floor
And eagerly find a place
But Summer no longer wants to dance--
Now she wants to race!
And race She does, as her fans line the street--
There are picnics to attend, and our friends
To go and meet.
A bike ride in the morning, then coffee at ten
Swimming after lunch; light the grill again.
Baseball in the park, under the too hot sun
If and when it cools off
We’ll get the chores done.
Watering and mowing and watering again
Fresh veggies growing, and the weeds don’t stop
So we keep on running, and at the end of the day
Some of us are too tired to stop and pray.
We’ll catch up later, after all, Summer’s here--
We can go to church any time of year.
One more hot dog
Pass the watermelon
Stop at every yard sale
To see what is sellin’
Keep moving, moving, moving
Up and down the street--
We’re too busy now
Our neighbors to greet.
How did this happen?
Where did Summer go?
She just disappeared,
But her perfume lingers still
Even as the nights have a new chill--
But fall sales are the latest thrill.
Let’s head to the mall before it’s too late
We’ve forgotten Summer,
And left Him at the gate
Of a wondrous garden
That blooms year round…
And His music plays when there is no sound.
