He fought for his country
Saw more than he should
Blood all over
Skeletons in his closet
Demons in his head

Tormented
Alone
Private
Withdrawn

He walked into the church
Washed in the Light
Holy Spirit dance of praise
Free from torment and darkness
A new feeling for his soul

Home
Hugs
Love
Free

He walked into the house
Drowned in darkness
Familiar spirits swarmed
Longing for the light
Confusion filled his soul

Lost
Alone
Rage
Bondage

His Gun in hand
No moment to think
Canít breathe
Darkness swallowed his light
And won

Questions
Doubts
Loss
Friends

His body burned
Ash to ash
Family and friends
Who donít even speak
Say final words

Flowers
Tears
Rage
Accusations

His ultimate decision
Good or bad
Is final for all
Who loved unconditionally
Heaven or hell

Dark
Light
Right
Wrong

God is God
We cannot judge
He loved the Light
Misunderstood Godís mercy
Made a choice

Chains
Bound
Grace
Free

A battle fought
In the heavenlies
Light scatters shadows
Darkness swallowed his light
And won

This is beautifully written - a tribute to a man full of life yet confused at times. I am glad we are not God. I love our God of grace and mercy.

Very powerful imagery. This tugged at me.

Wow, Marita! That first stanza is so gripping and tragic! What a sad story all the way through! I hate it when darkness wins! I know these mental/emotional torments harass many of those who have gone off to serve our country. What an awful "reward" for their selfless service! Thank you for reminding us of the horrors of war in this well-written piece!
