Back through time the scientist peered
Horn rimmed specs, and flowing beard
“See”, he said, with joyful glee
“Another fleeing galaxy”

“We know how it all began
With a most enormous bang
With matter flung at rocket pace
Accelerating to outer space”

“Beyond the furthest asteroid
Exists a black and empty void
Where the stars never shine
Before the very start of time”

“We map out celestial seas
And integrate velocities
We do this most conclusively
By Newton and trigonometry”

“When molten rock, gave early birth
To what we now call, ‘ Mother Earth’
Then out of some primeval sea
Man’s ascent, was evolutionary”

“So there you are, now do you see
That almost comprehensively
We know, all there is to know
Of heavens above and earth below”

“Well, well”, I said “I hear your verse
A discourse on the universe
But much of what you have to say
Happened in a different way”

“Back before the dawn of man
God was, and is, the great ‘I Am’
Alone in glory, no time, no space
He planned the earth a perfect place”

“Words of power, no one to hear
Ineffable to the human ear
Words of power, He spoke because
From out of nothing ; creation was”

“Upon earth’s dark and lifeless land
God laboured on, as He had planned
He sculptured dust for Adam’s life
From Adam’s rib, formed Adam’s wife”.

The scientist threw a small wry smile
“ Now that’s way out, by half a mile
Something from nothing ; not at all
Why, that’s anti- conservational”

Beetle- browed , lips drawn thin
No matter what I said to him
He was spoiling for a fight
I was wrong and he was right

“Retreat”, I whispered, I want no more
And gracefully backed right out the door
I’ll pray he treads, where believers trod
And leave him in the hands of God.

This was a very brave topic to take on, and it was even braver to write it as a poem! Very good rhythm and structure. Your ending was interesting, and true. Sometimes we do just have to step back and leave God to do the rest of the work.

A very creative poem with some clever word choices.
