TITLE: Prayer of Praise and Petition
By Verna Cole Mitchell

Before the sun climbs to her perch,
Announcing each new day
With pinks and purples oíer the sky,
I bow my head to pray.

Lord, thank You for your awesome works,
Your beauty in creation.
Each panorama that You paint
Is cause for inspiration.

I praise You for Your steadfast love,
Salvation full and free,
For mercies new each morning,
And grace You grant to me.

Youíve blessed me so abundantly,
Supplied my every need,
And even in the trying times,
I know You'll safely lead.

Iím thankful for Your oversight
Of all things everywhere,
And that You still will listen when
I come to You in prayer.

I ask for Your protective hand
On friends and family,
That You will guide and keep the ones
Who are so dear to me.

Deliver them from Satanís ploys
And draw them close to You.
Then shelter them beneath Your wings,
And make them strong and true.

And, Father, would You bless Your church
Around the world today.
May Gospel reach the hungry hearts,
Both near and far away.

Please help our nationís leadership
To listen to Your voice.
When You divine direction give,
May they make that their choice.

Direct our country to return
To values of the past,
When founded on your Holy Word
With virtues that would last.

And with armed service personnel,
I pray that youíll abide.
May firemen and policemen feel
Your presence at their side.

For those with needs of every kind,
I ask Your healing touch,
As well for any in distress
Who need Your help so much.

May I work for Your kingdomís good
Until You come again,
My life bring honor to Your name,
For Jesus' sake, Amen.

Then when the moon has scaled the heights
To end the realm of sun,
Iíll kneel in meditation to
Thank God for all Heís done.

I really liked the almost childlike quality of this poem - its simplicity speaks volumes.

This is so smoothly constructed and beautifully stated. I adore everything about this!
Emily Gibson05/23/09
This is so well constructed it would make a wonderful hymn. Put it to music!
Patricia Herchenroether05/23/09
This flows beautifully; great rhythm and rhyme-I love simple poetry and you covered everything that I pray for too!

An inspiring reminder to acknowledge and include God in every part of our lives.

I enjoyed this the first time I read it and even more so the second. I see this in an anthology Verna or published in an E-Zine. It's beautiful and shows heart and love. Kudos girl!

Lovely! Simply lovely!! I wish I could write poetry like you do!! :)

I especially liked these lines from the last stanza:
"Then when the moon has scaled the heights
To end the realm of sun"
They're so lyrical!

GREAT job!!

I prayed this along as I read it. How could I not? Just the words and thoughts of my heart. How did you know?

Joy Faire Stewart05/26/09
Wonderful prayer and I was touched that it takes you through the day... morning 'til evening. Excellent!

Beautiful...This should be in a book of inspirational poetry. I especially loved your closing lines. Well done!
Jan Ackerson 05/27/09
Wonderful--I love the fact that none of your rhythm or rhymes felt at all forced--It just flowed so simply and beautifully.
Melinda Wells05/27/09
This was wonderfully written. The bible says we should pray continually, and so many of us, don't know what that looks like. You have shown what continual prayer looks like. Thank you!
Pamela Kliewer05/27/09

What a WONDERFUL poem for our country. This needs to read on Memorial Day, on the 4th of July, on the National Day of Prayer and every day in between!
