At first
I ran from panic
racing the early morning moon
across a desert floor
threateningly alive with dark shadows
writhing wraiths of blackness
ambush terrors
Then
I ran out of pride
dancing with eagle wraiths cast
along the plain
freedom winging my feet
tantalizing visions of promised blessings
marriage delights
Once
I paused from breathlessness
drinking ephemeral mist
within a rocky cleft
timorous bubbles faltering
barely wetting droughty throat
sweat haze
Later
I slowed out of weariness
shrinking under uncaring noontime sun
without respite
pooling mirages beckoning onward
entrancing my eyes
fog stupor
Finally
I stopped out of habit
arranging a careless sleeping place
upon rocky ground
furtive thoughts bedeviling my mind
pulsing with Father’s last words, and Mother’s
birthright theft
Suddenly
I quivered from dread-full awe
enfolded within a blazing radiance
devoid of earthly light
a stairway, there, cascading into heaven’s enormity
drawing my eyes upward, higher, ever higher
heaven ladder
Ceaselessly
angels shimmered with inscrutable purpose
ascending, descending
up and down that stairway
their holy songs wordlessly drumming inside my ears
praising the Lord of Hosts
Angel-Army King
“I AM,” He whispered in thunderblasts
my heart stopping
stuttering
pounding
time suspended
persisting
spiraling
No, could it be?
I see the angels soaring down to my earth
up to the very heavens
remembering Father praying
“May God Almighty favor you”
me
this God?
“I AM GOD
God of Abraham your father
God of Isaac
I AM the Lord.”
Frozen
I wait in terror
seeing, hearing, knowing this answer
to everything
my unbirthed questions burning within
a fomenting heart-choked chaos
tongue trusses
“I give you
this land, the land on which you rest
descendants like its blowing dust
shifting and spreading to its ends
blessed through you
I AM with you
watching o’er you
wherever you go
bringing you back
back to this land
never leaving you
till my promise is done
no
I will never leave you
until I complete my plan for you."
Now
I awake from alert sleep
tingling with wonder-prickles
up my spine and down
dimly understanding that I slumbered in
the living God’s place, His Holy House
Bethel monument
