up and down
tiny feet chase around
the tree,
clicking, chittering
up and down
flashes of gray-brown fur
scrabble across the bark
up and down, up and down
up and down
finches flit
bright black and yellow plumage
criss-crosses from
tree to feeder
and back again
twittering, warbling
up and down
was that “per-chic-o-ree” or
“po-ta-to-chip”?
up and down
a tiny nuthatch travels
along the tree trunk
searching, searching
where have the bugs gone?
softly singing
up and down
“what, what, what?’
stealing sunflower seeds
black and ripe
hammer ‘til they open
reveal the food within
up and down, up and down
up and down
small feet sway
dreaming, swinging
in the spring afternoon
creaking, squeaking
up and down
two small feet
reach up to the sky
to come plummeting down again
up and down, up and down
up and down
the song of the frogs
musical modulations
hidden in the depths
of sweet earth-scent
trilling, warbling
up and down
leaping, splashing
through puddles and bogs
whistling, burbling
up and down, up and down
up and down
raindrops prance
tiny fairies
twirling, leaping
pitter-patter, plip-plop
up and down
rhythmically dancing
singing a song of spring
up and down, up and down
