She was sleeping on her side when I walked into the bedroom. I sat on the edge of the bed and said a quick prayer before I settled in. Rolling over, I put my arm around her waist. My hand began to move up and down with her breathing.

Up and down…

Tears of joy.

Tears of sadness.

Up and down…

Births of babies.

Deaths of loved ones.

Up and down…

Victories we’ve seen.

Challenges we’ve faced.

Years and years of up and down.

For better and for worse.

In sickness and in health.

‘Till death do us part.

Eighteen years of up and down.

And with the good Lord’s help.

There’ll be eighteen more.

I kissed her on the cheek and she stirred.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.

“Everything’s fine,” I said, “go back to sleep.”

Soon she was asleep again and the steady rhythmic breathing continued.

And I closed my eyes.

And I dreamed of up and down.

Yes, that's marriage as God intended. Thanks for the reflections.

I loved your title, and I enjoyed the gentle undulation of your story! :)

A good marriage, as you have depicted, has so many ups and downs. The joy comes, as you demonstrate, as you face them both together. You wrote a beautiful piece.

What a wonderful mood of peace in this tender story.

Like that. Simple but loving care of a spouse to his partner.

Sweet entry of what exists in a true marriage. Lovely thoughts.

Great use of a brevity of words, it was as if I could picture the whole scene. Loved the ending too.
