The Passing
A solar system is heading our way. It will pass through our solar system in the year 2016. In that solar system is a planet just like Earth. It has oceans, continents and an atmosphere very similar to ours. That planet will skim past Earth on the morning of August 6, 2016. On that day, it will be possible to jump onto that other planet.
A group of us have decided to leave Earth on that day and begin a new life on that new world. We will live differently there. We have all agreed that we will all be equals, that each one of us deserves an equal share on that planet. Each one of us will have a dwelling which cannot be taken away. We will all help each other build homes and grow our food. Doctors, teachers, farmers, craftsmen, builders, architects, entertainers – all different kinds of people have joined and vowed that we will all live to support each other, care for each other, and raise our children together so that they will honor this same vow.
August 7, 2016, the day after “the passing.” It turns out that everyone on Earth had wanted to start anew on that planet. We all secretly in our hearts had been wishing for a way to begin living in peace with one another. Everyone signed up to jump across. That’s when we all realized that we all had this same dream in our hearts.
A great world-wide discussion began. If all of us secretly desire to live in peace, and if we are all willing to make this vow, why don’t we just make that vow now and begin living that way now? So we did. It wasn’t perfect. There were a few problems. But on August 6, 2015 the entire world vowed to begin living as we would on that coming planet.
As the planet approached in late July of 2016, people gathered to watch the planet’s arrival. On the morning of August 6, 2016 the planet skimmed past ours. But a funny thing happened. Everyone loved the world we have now so much that not one single soul jumped across.
Now it is August 6, 2050, and if it weren’t for the pictures, our children would think “the passing” was just a fairy tale.
