Topic: The Kingdom of God (03/12/09)

By Kenneth Heath

“Going to church does not make you a Christian, anymore than going to MacDonald’s’ will make you a hamburger.” Keith Green 1978.
Peter and Susan waddled up to the Pearly Gates only to find that they could not fit through the narrow gap between the gate posts. Written in big gold lettering were the following words “ Blessed are they that do His Commandments, that they may enter in through the gates into the city.”
Squeeze as they may, there was no way that they could fit through and so with heavy hearts they stepped aside so that the other thin pilgrims could pass through. Sweating profusely they went and sat just outside the city wall in the hot noonday sun and thought about their predicament.
Then Susan remembered Jesus’ Words in Mathew 7:13 when He spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven, “Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and spacious is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who are entering through it.”
“Oh dear,” said Peter. “Do you think He was talking about us when He said in Mathew 7:22, “Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in your Name and many mighty works in your Name? And then I will say to them openly, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly.”
Tears started to flow down Susan’s cheeks as she realised that they were not going to enter into the Kingdom. Becoming angry she shouted, “But Lord I was always a good girl. I never smoked, drank or slept around. I went to church twice on a Sunday and attended all the religious conventions in our city. I was baptised as a baby and did the same for my children. As a family we gave to numerous charities and tithed to our local church. I even worked at a homeless shelter twice a week. I have always loved You and Your Word and can recite many verses off by heart.”
“Yes Lord”, said Peter. “How does it work? We did everything the Pastor told us to do, even said the “Sinners Prayer.” Do you know how many books I have purchased through the years about You and Your Word? We were promised eternal life in Your Kingdom. We did everything we could to make it easy for You to allow us in, so what’s going on?”
Suddenly the Sun was blocked out by a great light and a voice speaking as with the sound of thunder answered “Indeed you read My word. True you were generous with the finances I blessed you with. Yes, you both did many a good deeds and were obedient to your Pastor but I never knew you! You liked what you heard but you never took the time to understand what I said. You have both become so fat and heavy with my word, never realizing that I was calling out to you through faith, to establish an everlasting relationship me. I sent dear Holy Spirit to be your helper and comforter but you ignored Him.”
“Nobody can enter into the Kingdom without meeting my preconditions. Nobody can have a relationship with me, without having a relationship with the Holy Spirit. You need to be Baptized in water and in the Holy Spirit and with fire. This only comes about if you earnestly seek me and then once you have been born again into the Kingdom and I have given you a new song and language, then and then only can I know you”
“My Word has all the instructions you will need to be in the Kingdom and the Holy Spirit will then guide you through life. I say this because I am going to return you both to earth. Your motor vehicle accident was not fatal and you will recover from your injuries. However, it is up to you to lose all that unnecessary weight and find the narrow path that leads to eternal life with me. Remember the keys to the Kingdom are in my Word and it is up to you through faith in Jesus Christ to act on them. ”
Suddenly, the sun was blotted out and a shrill voice shouted, “Over here, they’re alive; it’s a miracle they survived the crash!”
Grace had given Peter and Susan a second chance, but will we all get that chance??

Thought provoking. I wonder how much I have to lose? God bless you.

I really liked the title of this piece! That really drew me in and made me wonder what it was all about. :) You really gave so many good Scripture based points that need to be said! I think I would have ended it with them waking up though, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

Good title and opening quote, you had me hooked...but the ending seemed to include too much of a "tell" by God and not enough "show" for me.
