Ten years ago, during a youth retreat on the other side of the world, a young man was called by God to the mission field. At the tender age of 15, he didn’t have a clue where or when God would send him. But he knew without any doubt whatsoever; God would send him one day.
Multitudes of prayers have been lifted to heaven over the years. And in one simple answer, a faithful God has brought together pastor and missionary to change the world for Christ.
Many might not be aware of this small fact – the most unevangelized country in all of South America is Uruguay.
Unlike most Central and South American countries which are predominantly Catholic, Uruguay is largely secular. It is not surprising that divorce, abortion and suicide rates are skyrocketing out of control.
Uruguay is quite cosmopolitan, especially in the country’s capital, Montevideo.
When you think mission field . . . do you think of poverty-torn, developing countries where children are starving and AIDS is wiping out communities?
Think again. Affluent, atheistic Uruguay is not unlike many regions Paul visited on his three missionary journeys. Some of his greatest challenges were presenting the Gospel to intellectuals who worshipped many gods and sacrificed to idols. Yet he always reached them on their level, holding fast to the truth. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is always more powerful than any prevailing belief.
Thus, this young missionary has his work cut out for him, joining the small team in Uruguay. As he follows his Lord by faith and keeps his gaze firmly fixed on Him, one day, we will hear miraculous reports of the large Christian population in Uruguay.
