But Lisa was enjoying her work at Renee’s Clothing Apparel and her love life with Daniel, a co-worker.
Living in Germany was fascinating and educational. She loved visiting the many castles of the country and the quaint and lovely restaurants that were scattered throughout the countryside.
So it came as a shock to her when she began to feel homesick for America. It was the first of September when she began planning a trip to go back home. By the end of September she was in the air and hours away from home.
One of the first things that struck her after the plane landed, as she walked into the airport were the many large and colorful posters. The large posters didn’t bother her; for there were many in Germany. But, what bothered her were the words on the poster, “Your Government is Working Hard For You; Be Sure You Are Working Hard For It, Too!”
Not only did those words make her cringe but the many cameras that were propped up everywhere. It seemed that the tiny, midsize and large cameras were everywhere—even in the bathrooms.
After finding a taxi and resting comfortably in the back, she began looking at the huge billboard signs along the way and was dismayed to read the same words, “Your Government is Working Hard For You; Be Sure You Are Working Hard For It, Too!”
Along with the large and obtrusive signs, she saw that most cars had only two passengers inside. There was no deviation; every car had just two.
As the taxi approached her home, she noticed that all the familiar streets were gone and in their place were rows and rows of high rises; all pristine and built with steel and glass. So much of what she saw looked like scenes from “Back to the Future.”
Finally she arrived at her parent’s home. She was relieved to see that the old home was still there but all the other homes on the street had been changed over to look like all the rest.
She rang the door bell and seconds later her mother came to the door.
“Oh, hello dear! Come in, come in! How are you dear?”
She wasn’t there more than two minutes when her mother began a litany of “Yes, that’s what Comrade Chalmers says…Oh no; Comrade Chalmers frowns on such matters…”
Everyone else in the family used the same words and all through dinner she kept hearing the many praises of Comrade Chalmers.
She noticed too, that her family dressed in drab colors and patterns and that they all agreed with whatever was said. No one disagreed or displayed an independent thought and that was becoming tedious and tiresome.
She made a vow that she would stick it out for a week and then return to Germany. At least there she would be able to be independent and maintain a life of hope and promise.
The day she left was cloudy. Before leaving, she watched as her mother prepared breakfast.
“Dear, I wish you could stay. We all want you to, ya know. Was it something any of us said or did to offend you?”
“No, Mom. I just can’t live handle this ‘Comrade Chalmers stuff’. What happened to the Presidency and what brought on all this sameness?”
“Well my dear, things change and since you’ve been gone, our economy got so bad we had to have someone who had more power and influence. We’ve been hearing that Europe, too, has been suffering but Comrade Leader has told us that Europe is way behind times.”
Lisa felt powerless to respond to her mother’s words, for in the past she had tried to communicate with her and found it impossible.
Aboard the plane returning to Germany she thought about America and how much it had changed.
Ten hours later she arrived back in Germany. As she approached the inside of the airport she saw something that shocked and surprised her. For on many large posters through the airport were signs that read, “Coming Soon: Comrade Chalmers, Ministry of Truth and Love, With New Life For You!”
