They once were known as best of men;
Perfumed by scents of piety
They scorned to look at any sin,
Lest they be scorched the least degree…

They trimmed their beards the perfect way,
And on the streets they’d shout their prayers;
Declaring openly to all,
That they’re so pure no one else compares…

They make the richest sacrifice
Out in the light, so all may know—
That they’re the righteous men of God
So holy that they almost glow…

But in their perfume they walk by
The wounded man who needs their aid—
They pray so loud they cannot hear
The love of Him to whom they pray…

They boast of all they gave to God,
When it is mercy He desires…
They gave a tenth of their richest gifts,
But not their pride, into the fire…

They followed every little rule,
And strained each gnat from all they ate,
But ate a camel in their blindness:
For it is LOVE that makes men great…

America, the years are gone
When Pharisees led men astray—
But have we followed in their footsteps
And turned men from the narrow way?

In churches now, we’re scorning men
Who do not follow all our rules;
If they don’t dance to every doctrine,
We turn them out and call them fools.

The hurting man who’s wrecked by sin
No longer finds a resting place…
When will we see that what God asks
Is that we share His love and grace?

Oh, very good! I haven't read anything like this at all in this week's topic. Those last three stanzas really stand out--excellent!

Hold fast - there is yet a TRUE church that is not always found in the institutionalized one. Keep looking. Thanks for sharing your heart.

Very thought provoking poetry. I pray that is not how all American churches are viewed . . .
Norma-Anne Hough 01/21/09
It's really sad that so many churches throughout the world, are empty because somewhere along the line people have lost their first love.
Well done.

Very good...I think this is a universal problem not unique to the USA in any means...thanks for sharing your heart.
Beth LaBuff 01/21/09
I really like how this is in three sections with similarities and differences between the three groups. And this is so good, "And strained each gnat from all they ate, -- But ate a camel in their blindness"
Joy Faire Stewart01/21/09
Sorry to say so much of this is true, and you've said it brilliantly.

Excellent comparison--excellent poem.

Oh, excellent. The imagery is top rate, as is the message. Wonderfully done.
