Lessons from “It’s a Wonderful Life”

Our sons had to be convinced
Watching black and white movies
Was worthwhile,
This old cinematic tale and its characters
Caught them up right away
From steadfast George to evil Mr. Potter
They all resonate in our hearts at Christmas.

What surprised me most
Was their response to Donna Reed's Mary
As "hot"-
Where can we find one like her?
Her loyalty and love for George
Unequaled
Never wavering
Even when he’s lost in the storms of life
About to jump when he's forgotten how life could have been
So different, so empty, so unforgiving
Without him.

I want to be like her for you
When things go sour
I won't forget what brought us together
In the first place
When you lassoed the moon for me;
I'm warmth in the middle-of-the-dark night
When you need shelter.
I'm ZuZu's petals in your pocket
To remind you where you belong
When you are trying to find your way back home.

Very thoughtful poem. I enjoyed it.

I grew up without a TV, so the allusions to 'It's a wonderful life' were lost on me. Even so, the beauty of the lessons was not. To be someone else's port in the storm... every storm. A lovely love poem.

Something strange is going on with your entry on my computer. Odd symbols where they shouldn't be. . .

Other than that, I've never watched 'It's a Wonderful Life', but your poem has me wanting to rent it. :)

Oh, I LOVE the title of this, and the metaphor of "I'm ZuZu's petals for you..." Gorgeous!

So beautiful and like evryone else, I'm blown away by those last stanzas. Lovely!

Wow, I really like this. It doesn't hurt that you've incorporated bits of one of my favorite movies (and Jimmy Stewart is my all time actor as well), into this lovely piece.

The last portion is just awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Emily, in case you don't see the Highest Rankings each week, I just wanted to let you know that you did very well in the Challenge this week. Even though you didn't quite make it into the winners' circle, you made it into the highest rankings for Level 3, placing th for the level. You also made it into the Highest Rankings overall, placing 39th out of all the entries for the week. Well done.

If you would like to check the highest rankings for yourself, you can see them here:
