Topic: Christmas Cards (11/06/08)

TITLE: My Dearest Friend
By Mary Alice Bowles

Jackson, Kentucky
December 8, 2008

My dearest friend Carol:

Thank you for your beautiful Christmas card and letter I received yesterday. I am glad you sent it early this year, because I have a big surprise for you.

You are a total blessing in my life. Being your next door neighbor and best friend for all those years moves me to happy tears. I know you decided to leave the neighborhood and move to New York after James died, but miles cannot separate a beautiful friendship such as ours.

Carol, I would like to wish you a very merry Christmas. May the love of Jesus touch you in every deed and thought in this Christmas season. This year I decided to make you a very special Christmas card written by me, just for you!

This Christmas season 2008, letís celebrate
Letís sing the praises of his birth
Our voices must be heard,
Above the mess and clutter of the earth
I love him so very much
I can see him coming in the clouds
Every time I feel his touch

I know that he is still alive and well
He is also in control
Even though we are growing old
We are still the mothers of this country
We can spread the news of the greatest story ever told

As the economy floats toward a place of uncertainty
Stories of chaos are written in the headlines of every newspaper
Rumors of war fill the airways
We do not need to worry, but we need to labor
The fields are ripe and ready for harvest
We must never rest or waiver
Until we see him coming in clouds of glory
He is our blessed hope

I look forward to this Christmas 2008
I feel his rapture in every breath I take
The hope of Jesus at Christmas or any other time
Is my life line

I go to bed at night and sleep a peaceful sleep
My dreams are of another place
Where hunger is not a problem
Jesus is the light
And there will never be any more night.

Carol at our age, we are now the mothers of this country, we must carry out the mission. We must carry the story of Jesus to the utter most parts of the earth, just as we have so many years past. We must not give up the watch. For one day, if we keep our lamps trimmed and burning, we will see him appearing in clouds of glory, then he will no longer be the baby in the manger, He will be our King of Kings and Lord of Lords and I am still watching the eastern skies.

By the way, like I always told you year after year, I am still expecting Jesus to come back on Christmas day! Remember the way you use to tease me about Christmas dinner. You would say, ďAlice, why cook your Christmas dinner, this could be the year.Ē Then you would giggle that silly little giggle of yours that made my ears pop and crack. I always knew you wasnít giggling at Jesus, you were giggling at me.

Carol, I almost forgot, I am taking you up on the invitation, believe it or not? I am coming to New York for Christmas. My son George purchased me a round trip ticket, his Christmas present to me. I will be staying one whole week. I am so very happy.

Get out all the old picture albums so we can reminisce. I am bringing one whole suitcase full of mine.
Get the coffee pot ready!

Please donít forget to pick me up; my plane will be arriving at John F. Kennedy Airport at five fifteen on the evening of December 14th.
Canít wait to see you!

Love you
Your best friend Alice

Thanks for a glimpse into a beautiful Christian friendship... an element lacking too often in our too-busy world.

These women were blessed to have each other. Your story is a reminder that I need to stay in touch with friends that have been so dear over the years.

It looks like Jesus touched both their lives through their friendship. Wonderful, well written story. Thanks for sharing.
