Topic: Christmas Lights (10/30/08)

TITLE: The Lights (With a Tip of the Hat to "The Bells" by Edgar Allen Poe)
By Verna Cole Mitchell

See the stately tree with lights -
Christmas lights!
What a world of happiness their lovely view incites
As they shimmer, shimmer, shimmer,
In the darkness of the room,
Where the children catch a glimmer
And with joyful hearts a-simmer,
They have happy hopes in bloom.
Then they twirl, twirl, twirl,
As with joyousness they whirl
To the beauty that invites
From the lights, lights, lights, lights
Lights, lights, lights,
From the glimmer and the shimmer of the lights.

See the brilliance of the lights -
Christmas lights!
What a world of blessedness their radiance ignites!
How they shine, shine, shine,
With an incandescent beam
Of significance divine,
Like the magiís holy sign
That had come to them in dream,
As they glow, glow, glow,
In a grand symbolic show
Of the star that shone so brightly on that holiest of nights.
Oh the lights, lights, lights, lights,
Lights, lights, lights -
Oh the shining and the glowing of the lights!

I love this, too. It has a sophisticated and unusual rhythm, descriptions that are simply perfect, and a joyful and happy sound that is just the way Christmas should be!

My mind was singing this as I read it. Excellent work! I think Edgar would like it too. :)

I've never read "The Bells" but I'm sure this is a fitting reflection, based on the rhythm of the poem. Excellent work!
Yvonne Blake 11/11/08
oooh.... I had to re-read it out loud and I could hear all the shades of sounds. Beautiful!
Loren T. Lowery11/12/08
Oh the lights, the brilliant wonderful lights --- oh how you have brought them to life and made them so real!

Shirley McClay 11/12/08
Not into poetry much but this blew me away. I wanted more to read!
Rick Higginson 11/12/08
Poe was certainly a master when it came to meter, and you've captured the flow beautifully, without losing any coherence in your new lyrics. Very nice.

I never read "The Bells" either, but you've got me curious now...well done on its own merits.
George Parler 11/12/08
This was a delight to read. Excellent choice of words to say so much with so little. Well done.

I love this Verna - there are such beautiful lines. I particularly loved 'How they shine, shine, shine,
With an incandescent beam
Of significance divine,
Like the magiís holy sign' The repeated words are so powerful and clever -
it has definitely made me want to read 'The Bells' but I think I might enjoy your take more. Its so full of joy and 'Christmassy'!! Thankyou
