Topic: Countdown to Christmas/Advent (10/23/08)

TITLE: Advent calendars don't work in eternity
By Helen Paynter

Hmmm. Christmas. Isnít it a long time coming?

You say you canít wait? You donít know the first thing about anticipation. Iíve been looking forward to this for an eternity!

They say of me that a thousand days is like an evening. Well let me tell you, sometimes a single day seems like a thousand. All part of being the uncreated Eternal One, of course.

I just canít wait for Christmas! Iím chewing my metaphorical nails and sitting on the edge of my figurative seat. Youíll never guess what I have to give you! NoÖ noÖ noÖ you neednít try, because you just wonít be able to. Itís beyond anything youíve ever imagined. ItísÖ itísÖ itís so wonderful Ė so gob-smackingly stupendous Ė youíre going to be bowled over!

I know Iíve given you a few hints through the years, but really, itís far better than your wildest dreams. Far better, even, than all the other gifts Iíve given you. Remember when I set the glory of the universe at your feet? Believe me, that will pale into insignificance when you meet the One who spoke it into existence. Or remember the transcendent wonder of your wedding night? Thatís just a two-dimensional image of the unspeakable reality Iíve got planned.

Hold on, let me look at your Christmas listÖ

Number one. Youíre sick of stumbling in the darkness. Youíd like a pocket torch. Oh, my friend, you have no idea! Just wait Ďtil you see what Iíve got you!

(But of course, how could you be as eager to receive light, as I am to give it? Youíve never really seen true light. I am the Light!)

Number two. Youíd like something nice to eat. Oh, just you wait! Gingerbread? Chocolates? Nah, youíd be hungry again in no time. How do you fancy the Bread of life? Generous portions, unlimited supply, guaranteed to satiate, warranted never to jade your palateÖ

Am I whetting your appetite yet?

Number three. Your life is dull and drab. Youíd like something to cheer you up for a week or two. My child, youíre setting your sights so low. How about super-abundant, hyper-overflowing, joy-oozing, capacity-tearing, mind-blowing, imagination-stretching, mega-sizzling, never-ending Life? Oh, Iím sorry, human words fail me sometimes. Youíll just have to wait and see.

You say you canít wait for Christmas. But your desire for my present is so puny compared to my craving to give it to you. After all, my excitement is fuelled by an eternity of planning; a bottomless love; and an infinite imagination. Sorry to pull rank, but there it is.

Oh, my dearest child. Just a few days to go. You think youíre excited? Have I got a gift for you!

And what a GIFT He gave us, eh? Wonderfully exciting and I love this image of God eagerly anticipating His Gift of Grace and with it, eternal life with HIM!

Masterfully done, and wonderfully out-of-the-box. SO glad you've entered, and given us this delicious reminder of the TRUE gift of Christmas.

The phrase "an eternity of planning" really captured my imagination.

Very creative! It made me relish again the delight of what what God given me,

I love the hope that is so "out there" in this.

YES, YES, YES! I'll take it all! Sound selfish? Oh the gifts HE has for us!
I love the way you wrote this.

Wow! This is brilliant. How can one possibly capture God's emotions? They truly are beyond words and you brought that out, while finding words to do so. An awesome reminder of the extent of His love for us! Thank you for writing this.
