TITLE: Angel of Light
By Jack Taylor

Angel of Light

Lucy4: Saw your personal in the ďLiving FaithĒ chat room.

Fishfinder: You sound lonely.

Fishfinder: Actually, Iíve just moved from home. Looking for some friendship.

Lucy4: If youíre some predator looking for some naÔve teen you can forget it. You can see from my pictures that I donít fit that frame.

Fishfinder: Actually, you look like a distant cousin of Marilyn Monroe, but donít worry. Iím at Bible school studying to be a pastor.

Lucy4: That is so cool. Iím studying the Bible a lot lately. Like this morning I was reading 1 John 4:18 ďThere is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fearÖĒ. Are you afraid of me? Were you dissing me by that reference to Marilyn Monroe?

Fishfinder: Not at all. You look great. Like someone right out of a professional studio.

Lucy4: Itís my last yearís grad picture. You can only be who you are, right? Whatís a calendar boy like you do when youíre not memorizing the prophets?

Fishfinder: Funny you should ask? Actually, weíre supposed to be out witnessing right now but I didnít feel like doing any face to face stuff right now so thought Iíd try another angle.

Lucy4: Are you telling me that the only reason youíre on here is for spiritual scalps? You donít really care about who I am?

Fishfinder: Guess Iím not too good at this, am I?

Lucy4: John 8:32 says ďThe truth will set you freeÖĒ. Maybe you just need a little coaching. Why donít you tell me a little bit about yourself? If you want friends you have to get real. If you want fish you need bait that works.

Fishfinder: To tell you the truth, my parents have gone to church all their lives but they havenít got this marriage thing figured out yet. My dad left home for a year once and I got caught up with everything I could get my hands and eyes on. My youth pastor helped me last year to get free of a lot of stuff so you might say Iím making a new start.

Lucy4: Hope those shots of me at the beach donít make things hard for you. Sometimes friends arenít so discreet. I havenít always been the way I am now. Things change. I understand that. Itís tough to be away from everyone who has been helping you with that change.

Fishfinder: My youth pastor says I should find an accountability partner.

Lucy4: What a great idea? Do you have anyone yet?

Fishfinder: I just canít seem to see anyone here who might understand my struggles.

Lucy4: Maybe we could help each other. Some of the guys seem to think Iím still struggling with finding the right level of modesty. I could coach you on making friends and you could coach me on what to wear.

Fishfinder: I donít know. We donít really even know each other.

Lucy4: Hey, didnít you write a blog on the elections not too long ago.

Fishfinder: You saw that? Wow! I have to admit I really hadnít figured out this whole faith thing back then.

Lucy4: I really feel like I got to know your heart through reading that blog. I think some people get really hung up on the outward appearances and donít let others get inside them but you just were so open.

Fishfinder: Itís probably one of my weaknesses. Sometimes I think Iím too impulsive. Itís like I havenít figured out whatís okay and whatís not until itís already too late.

Lucy4: Everywhere you go youíre going to find others pretending to be what theyíre not. Someone has to be real. I think if youíre going to be a pastor you need to be real about your temptations and weaknesses. I think your youth pastor is right. You need someone like me to help you out.

Fishfinder: Iím getting this weird shiver up my back and this tension in my neck.

Lucy4: A sure sign Iím on the right path. Why donít you jog it off and then let me know when you and I can connect and figure out this accountability thing?

Fishfinder: I just looked at my Bible and it says in Gal 5:1 [NIV]ďIt is for freedom that Christ has set us free . Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.Ē Thanks for chatting. Iíve learned a lot. I think Iíll ask my roommate.

Lucy4:Iíll see you again soon.

Ooooh, very good! There was one line at the beginning that I think had the wrong attribution, but I've gotta tell ya'--when Fishfinder finally started to discern what was going on, I was so releived!

Good story. We neeed to be vigilant, especially online. Nicely done.
