Not a minute left to spare;
Hardly time to check their make up,
Let alone to fix their hair.
Maude was rinsing off the dishes
When she heard the music stop.
From the country music station,
Jack let this announcement drop:
“Let me have your full attention.
Things are really bad outside.
We’ve had rain for several days now;
It appears it won’t subside.
”We’ve received an urgent message;
It’s a public service thing.
Men are working on the phone lines;
It’s the worst it’s been all spring.
“All the lines are filled with water;
(These things happen now and then.)
It will take a few short hours
Til you use your phone again.
“First you place your phone receiver
Into something three feet high.
Let the water from the phone line
Run out til the line is dry.”
Maude and Blanche grabbed two tall trash cans;
Placed the phones as they were told.
Then they listened to the station
Just to see how it’d enfold.
All throughout this mountain county
Lines were busy, turmoil reigned.
Thousands kept a patient vigil
While their lines were being drained.
Then young Jack down at the station
Saw his boss burst through the door.
“Pack your things and just get out, kid,
You don’t work here anymore.
“Why’d you make that fake announcement?
We’ll be sued for all we’ve got!
Businesses are closed for hours.
I’m just glad I wasn’t shot!”
Jack just sat, uncomprehending.
Looking like he’d have a stroke.
“Sir, it wasn’t really nothin’
But an April Fool’s Day joke!
“If you’d give me one more minute
So I could apologize
To my fans who’ve listened to me,
Folks I love and idolize.”
Picking up his trusty hand mike,
Jack’s good sense just went awry.
“Put your phone back on its cradle,
All your lines are drained and dry.
“Once more all the phones are working.
Mop the water from your floor.”
And with that, the station’s bosses
Sent Jack sailing through the door.
