commences at noon in the park in McCoonian.
From homes far and near there will come a confluence
of Bancrofts and Greeleys and Jacksons and Greuins.
The first to arrive are my PawPaw and Nanny
and right on their heels comes my first cousin Franny.
Great Grampa limps in with his cane in his hand;
the tales from his war years are much in demand.
Aunt Ava invited her young beau Evander;
teen twins Belle and Barbie stop short for a gander.
Aunt Doris struts in all dressed up for a party,
her brats held in check by my poor Uncle Marty.
In each person’s hands is a dish for the dinner.
There’s no one today who will leave this place thinner.
Fried chicken and veggies and salads abounding;
Much chitter and chatter and gossip resounding.
The dinner bell rings and the silence grows thunderous
as Grandpa gives thanks for our blessings so wondrous.
Teresa and Michael come late to the table
and squeeze in twixt Sandy and her cousin Mabel.
The main course completed it’s time for the sweet treats,
So out come the pies and the cakes and the sweetmeats.
With bellies filled up the old people sit cheering
while younger ones choose sides for games in the clearing.
Too soon comes the time for this shindig’s conclusion;
dismayed cries arise at the thought of seclusion.
The dishes are packed up and emails exchanged,
stray children collected and play dates arranged.
We shake hands and hug and we promise to call,
then get in our cars with loud shouts of “Bye ya’ll!”
We’ll gather next year for more family communion
at the eighty-fifth annual Bancroft reunion.
