Morning is the kind of time I pull the covers ‘round
But know that I must be up to take out basset hound!
So up I go and even though I’d rather stay in bed
She smiles I think from ear to ear as if her thoughts were said
She sticks her big nose to the ground and all she does is sniff
To see what has passed by the yard that she may have a whiff
She slobbers and her ears get wet, but never does she miss
The smell of all her little pals whose scent the ground has kissed
She loves to eat and run and play but most of all to sleep
And guards the house so all is safe but never barks a peep
All are welcomed to come in “the more the merrier”
She even made the closest friend to next door’s terrier
How she can sleep the hours away, OH she is such a lard
But when she wakes the look of her is as if she’s worked hard!
She knows just how to pull your heartstrings with her soft ol’ eyes
And I know she is the dearest thing; a great heart in her lies
Such a comic was this one we dared to love so much
She became a part of us; our hearts she did so touch
But came the day, I dread to say, we had to let her go
She was the dearest greatest gift, of God’s love she did show
