I would that I had a brother
A man so tall and proud
A cool dude I could look up to
Like Thor up in a cloud
If the wildest mood might strike me
I might just short sheet his bed
Or maybe hide his baseball cards
Salt his milk after grace was said.
Oh, a sister would nicely due
An elegant woman
A fair princess to watch over
No mistake for a man
And should the crazy mood strike me
I might read her diary
Or dress her Barbie in feathers
Jump from door all scary
But, alas I sit here alone
No sibling to love or tease
Just a cat to watch my fool’s heart
No “hey big guy” you please
Not a pigtail to pull all day
Or wagon pulled along
Just working alone in silence
“Just cat and I,” the song
The dirge of the only child.
