Each year Father brought us to the feast in Jerusalem
Every time we visited the temple
My earthly father, he taught me well
I clearly remember turning twelve
Came of age and took my Bar Mitzvah
The year I got to speak with the priests
Trading many questions with the wise ones
Not noticing the time
We talked into the night
Servants brought food
Questions, discussion, more questions
Streets erupted with screaming, weeping
Worriedly it was announced:
Rome had taken away Israel’s right to the death penalty
The Scepter had passed from Judah
I reminded them of the Genesis prophecy:
“The specter will not depart from Judah
…until He comes to Whom it belongs”*
I AM here, can’t they see?
More questions, another day
More priests came
More talk of the scepter leaving
More questions to Me
Father and Mother were not there
Perhaps they stayed because of the tension
Good; more food
Darkness fell again
A hearty breakfast with thanks to God
Still more priests arrived
Tensions remained but focus changed
I asked fewer questions, they more
“Why have you treated us like this, searching for You?”
I turned to see my mother’s teary face
I smiled up at my father,
“Know ye not, I’d be in My Father’s house?”
I returned home in obedience
Growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man
No other man could have been my father
He wore a mantle made only for him
*Genesis 49:10(NIV)
