Time: 4-5 minutes
Characters: Buddy and Louise, a married couple with a slight communication problem
Props: 2 chairs, angled toward each other, or a small sofa; a Bible study book; Optional: other items, table, lamps, plants, etc. to make the staging area look more like a living room
Setting: The scene takes place in the coupleís living room. Buddy is just coming home from work at the end of the day. Louise is sitting, reading a book.
Buddy enters from offstage.
Buddy: You wonít believe the day Iíve had.
Louise: Pretty bad?
Buddy: The worst. (sits) Do you want to hear about it?
Louise: (sets book aside) Iím all ears.
Buddy: I was driving to work this morning when that jerk cut me off in traffic.
Buddy: Thatís right.
Louise: Who cut you off?
Louise: Who are you talking about?
Buddy: Thatís him. Did you know that he invited us to church on Sunday?
Louise: Who invited us?
Buddy: Yes, he did. I wouldnít have even guessed he was a Christian.
Buddy: Thatís what Iím trying to tell you...our neighbor, Bill Hu. He drives like he owns the road. I could tell it was his car. Thereís a fish emblem and a ďHonk if you love JesusĒ bumper sticker on the back. Not only did he cut me off, he ran a red light and almost caused an accident. From the way everybody was laying on their horns, Jesus got a lot of love today.
Louise: Thatís terrible.
Buddy: Thatís not all. I get to work and while Iím fixing my coffee, before our morning meeting, my coworker decides to go back and load up a plate with more food before anyone else arrives.
Buddy: Thatís him. So when the rest of the team gets there, thereís no coffee or donuts left.
Buddy: I know. Can you believe that guy? He actually said, Ďthe early bird gets the worm.í
Buddy: So you agree?
Louise: Agree with what?
Buddy: I canít believe youíre taking his side.
Louise: No. Iím on your side. I just want to know who took the food.
Buddy: No. Hu cut me off in traffic. Arenít you listening?
Louise: Yes. What is the name of the person that took the food?
Louise: Iím confused. Youíd better start over.
Buddy: You remember Joe Watt, that guy I work with? He promised our boss heíd have our teamís report in on time. Today he blamed another guy because it was late and had mistakes.
Louise: No kidding.
Buddy: He padded his expense report, so now weíre over budget.
Louise: Wow. (pause) Doesnít he lead a menís group at the church down the road?
Buddy: Yeah, if he werenít always badgering me about going, I never would have known. He invited us to church...again. Iím sure not going. I get enough of him at work.
Louise: I hear you.
Buddy: Hey, I donít mean to ramble on and on. How was your day?
Louise: Pretty good. Guess who came by to visit me?
Buddy: I dunno.
Louise: How did you know?
Buddy: I didnít. Thatís why I said ĎI dunnoí.
Louise: Oh, sheís such a lovely woman. Guess what she brought us?
Buddy: I dunno.
Louise: Yes--her. Guess what she brought?
Buddy: I dunno.
Louise: Thatís who Iím talking about. Arenít you even going to guess?
Buddy: Look, itís been a long day. Just tell me.
Louise: You remember my friend, Ida Noe. She brought us dinner the day I came home from the hospital after Joey was born. She prayed for us when you were sick.
Buddy: Thatís right. Her husband and sons helped out with the yard work when I broke my leg.
Louise: She brought over a loaf of the most delicious homemade bread. She was doing some baking this morning and thought weíd like to have some.
Buddy: Wow. Thatís really nice. Theyíre a terrific family.
Louise: Yes they are. (Holds up book) She gave me a copy of the Bible study her womenís group is about to start. It sounds interesting. (pause) She invited us to come to church with her family. I think we ought to go with her on Sunday. Do you want to know why?
Buddy: Donít tell me; because Huís the worst and Watt took seconds?
Louise: But Ida Noe shared the word.
