Why are you telling me this? I told you to get it over with a long time ago. No one should torture themselves in a loveless marriage. You’re doing Mary as much a favor as yourself. Set her free man. Set the both of you free.
How I wish I had never looked that woman’s way the second time. I don’t know if it’s her smile or the way she latches on to every word I say as though I’m someone special. You’d think she’s talking to the CEO of the company rather than me.
Didn’t you love the way her hair shone when she tossed it around? Kind of sparkled didn’t it? Like it was made out of sunbeams.
But Mary’s hair shines the same way.
When’s the last time Mary flirted with you with just a flick of her head the way she does? Bet you Mary’s voice doesn’t flutter when she hears your voice on the phone.
Would you shut up and let me think. Mary’s a good wife, a good mother, and a beautiful godly woman. I know she loves me and would do anything for me. Man how I wished I had never listened to you. I was so … content until you came along.
Hold the phone there buddy. I didn’t ask to be here. I was minding my own business down in the mail room pointing out to John how much better off he would be with Tiffany. It was the gleam in your eye that called me here.
But I didn’t encourage anything. Come to think of it, I was pretty much brain dead to what she was even doing.
Did I mention how her eyes sparkle when she looks at you … or how happy Dan is since he took off with what’s her name across town? I heard his children are doing much better in school now that they don’t have to listen to Dan and his ex fight all the time.
But Mary and I don’t fight. At least no more than any couple does. Most of the time we’re happy together. We enjoy each other’s company.
Oh brother. First you create me and now you argue with me. If you don’t believe me, read a book, watch a couple of movies, listen to Dr. Phil. They’ll all tell you the same thing. That I’m right.
That’s not what he says.
Who?
You know the one who is always here. He said I needed to see her through his eyes. See myself too. He said I can’t believe all the spin that’s thrown my way. Did you know that Dan’s daughter is sleeping around with a couple of college guys. She’s only sixteen for goodness sake. And he said what’s her name is already stepping out on Dan.
I should have known you’ve been listening to him again. He thinks he knows everything. Like he can see into the future are something. I guess the next thing he’s going to tell you is that everything’s not what it’s cracked up to be. I tell you, that guy is one big cliché.
Actually it was more like, I was a fool for listening to you and ignoring him.
Okay, Okay. Tell you what. Let’s sleep on it for now. There’s really no rush. You’re satisfied with good old Mary and that’s great. We can talk about this some other time. Maybe while you’re on that business trip next week.
I don’t think so. I didn’t create you nor call you here. You came to me the same way you did to Dan but I’m not buying it. Matter of fact I don’t know why I’m even having this conversation with you. Hit the road! I’m having a talk with the one who is always here. If you’ve got any problems with that, take it up with him.

Charles rolled over and gazed at Mary where she lay sleeping beside him. It had been a while since he realized how beautiful she really was. She looked like an angel laying there with the moonlight reflecting off her face. His face flushed with shame that he had even allowed such a thought to hover around him.
Nothing about life is perfect, but Charles knew their life was good. He placed his hand on Mary’s shoulder and fell asleep … content.
