Why spend money on what is not bread,
And trap hope in a stronghold of lies?
Why waste your life in the ways of the dead,
And your labor on what never satisfies?
The abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep.
His eyes are not content.
But the grave calls to all, as deep calls to deep
Fools renovate an earthly tent.
What a man desires is unfailing love,
All we have will be burned in the fire.
We forsake treasures in heaven above.
Better to be poor than a liar.
A wise man’s treasure holds up through fire,
Consumed not, but refined to perfection.
For to please the Lord is his heart’s desire.
He yearns to portray Christ’s reflection.
He who seeks the Lord lacks no good thing,
For his riches are not of this earth.
Bestowed upon him by the King of Kings,
Man does not comprehend their worth.
