The church is in the sanctuary,
With praise bands and the organ,
With offertories and special songs,
And Gospel preaching and prayer.

The church is in the hospital,
Where loving family and friends
Are gathered round to bid farewell
To a saint who is heaven bound.

The church is on the battlefield,
Where smoke and noise of bombings
Circle saved ones lying there,
Of soldiers, living and dead.

The church is in the dining room,
Where parents with their children
Will clasp hands all together
And offer up thanksgiving for their meal.

The church is in the shelter house
Where people in this place
Are blessed to have the ministry
Of humble servants, caring for their needs.

The church is in the conference room,
Where business people meet
To seek the applications of Godís Word
That make their labors worthy for His cause.

The church is in the prison cells,
Where martyrs have been placed,
As Christians who are living for their God
And never will refuse to speak their faith.

The church is in the restaurant,
Where men with Bibles opened
Are poring over ancient truths
At their regular study breakfast.

The church is on the mission field,
Where sent ones far from home
Tell stories to the natives there
Of the Savior and His love.

Wherever there are worshippers,
Obedient to Godís will,
Who serve as His ambassadors
Through Jesusí holy name,
......... There is the church.

If "home" is where you hang your hat, then "church" is where you hang out with fellow worshippers, right? Liked the creative and poetic thinking in this piece.

I enjoyed all the images here - a great view of the church in its many forms and locations.

I love the message in this poem. It's truth wrapped in beautiful words. There isn't' an aspect of the living church left out in these descriptive lines.

I can see this with a slide show of each scene, played as a sermon illustration. Very nice!

You gave us a great discription of what and where the church is. I really liked this one.

You included it all, dear friend, as I knew you would.
Which begs the question, "Where would we be without the nurturing and fellowship of the church? God ordained it for our growth and for our pleasure. Praise His name!

Wonderful journey through so many places that are inhabited by the members of the Church.

Softly and warmly inspired as ever. It is a treat reading your graceful poetry and the ring of truth it always contains.

I really liked your last verse. It just tied everything together so beautifully.

Indeed the church is anywhere believers gather. Great message. I enjoyed reading this.

Verna, this is a wonderful poem. You portrayed the church so very well. The church is also this website, FW'ers ministering to one another, probably never having met in person:)
