Although I walked through blazing flames,
The Water came - I wasn’t burned.
He doused me with the truth, with hope.
By teaching me, He helped me cope.
So grateful for each truth I learned.

The heaviness unbearable -
I frequently began to choke.
The haze so thick, could barely see
The hazards just ahead of me.
But Deluge saved me from the smoke.

So when I see first flickering
Or dancing flames intent to kill,
I let the Douser speak through me,
So brothers, sisters then may see
The Surging Force is with them still.

To listen, pray, a privilege
When right through me Truth overflows.
Such healing work is never mine,
But from the Drenching One each time,
And I am just the fire hose.

Although I walked through blazing flames,
The Water came - I wasn’t burned.
He soaked me with the truth, with hope.
By teaching me, He helped me cope.
I’m blessed to share each truth I learned.

“…When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” Isa. 43:2

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Gal. 6:2

This is beautiful, Laurie! I'm going to feature it in the Front Page Showcase for the week of August 18. Look for it on the FW home page, and congratulations!

Just what I needed to read today!

God knew I would "happen" upon these words to encourage my spirit.

Lovely, lovely words of truth, assembled...no, fashioned, to heal!

I really loved your poem. Jesus is really the Douser of the flames in our lives if we let Him. Great job!

Your choice word selection, rhyming pattern and message make for a great poem, in my book. It is one of those worth relishing!

The Douser of my flames...You know, I never quite looked at Him in that way before, but you are right! Beautiful poem. I am so glad this was showcased. Thank you for sharing your gift with us, Laurie.

Theology needn't get in the way of a glorifying poem, but technically speaking God does not douse flames with water... ever. The same way God does not scare away lions with a clown suit. Very capable writing, choice words like "truth" and "sharing lessons" will not be quickly forgotten.
Jason Swiney08/23/08
Great use of "water" as SYMBOLISM throughout a well crafted poem (not sure what the above critique was implying...theology?) Anyway, very clever, very solid, and from the responses it obviously spoke to many readers. Well done.
