“Amazing Grace” could not penetrate,
could not pierce
the black cloud squeezing
life out of a heart
stoic and void of breath.
No, no answers were found
outside the realm
of understanding and reason …
and this turmoil was beyond bearing.

Why did she come here anyway?

She closed her eyes, waiting, waiting, waiting.
Melodies faded in and out.
Others applauded words she no longer believed.
Other hands rose to receive
what she no longer hoped for.

Were there no more tears to shed?

A drop of Rain fell on her face,
her shoulder, her lips.
Just one drop at a time.
Steady, cool, soothing.
But oh, she knew such pleasures
were not destined as treasures
for her.
No, not her.

Why couldn’t she leave?

She stood so still, so straight.
Turning away
from the sight of joy emanating,
from souls illuminating
life.
Fingers cold,
aching from their grip,
holding on to a sanity all her own.
Survival, her teacher.

Why was her heart beating?

Rain, Wind, Fire bathed her
in a symphony of praise and Presence.
A gentle embrace
of Light and Majesty.
Intimate.
A wondrous place of no words,
no guilt, no shame.
Relief from the chains of darkness,
rest from the whispers of night.
The air fresh, sweet and pure.

Were those tears upon her cheeks?

Trembling fingers reached out and touched,
grasped,
held on tight to the Light
of Heaven’s promise and …
the warmth of His presence and …
the Majestic essence of Eternity.

Why did she ever let go?

Yes, she will return to this assembly.
This anointed, hallowed assembly
of Worship.

Wonderful description of the aching soul who once knew the power and promise of Faith. I like the ending. I like knowing that the touch of the Master is never forgotten on the hearts of His people and they can return to Him, at any time, and become fully restored and refreshed.

A gentle embrace
of Light and Majesty.
Intimate.
A wondrous place of no words,
no guilt, no shame." Very nice...

Oh, you've placed us so gently into the heart of this searching soul! I especially like the stanza with this wonderful image, "A drop of Rain fell on her face,
her shoulder, her lips.
Just one drop at a time.
Steady, cool, soothing." Beautiful!

You have such vivid poetic descriptions of the travail of this woman. This is beautifully written and I love the imagery here, "held on tight to the Light of Heaven’s promise and … the warmth of His presence and … the Majestic essence of Eternity." Wow!

This is EXCELLENT!!! A great example of poetry's ability to stir the heart in a way a simple story could not have done...

Great job of making us understand what was going on in her head.
Lovely example of free verse. Well done.
