I can’t believe this, look at me,
I’m eating in among the swine.
When I left home with money, this
Is not the life I had in mind.

I used to live it up, have fun,
And now those days are history.
I’ve lost it all and wonder now
Whatever will become of me.

My money’s gone, I have no food,
No place to live, I’m left to roam.
Can think of nothing else to do,
Sometimes I think of going home.

I’m on my way, I wonder if
My dad will let me work for him.
Yet after all that I have done,
He may not even let me in.

I’m almost there, I see him now,
A distant figure straight ahead.
So nervous I can barely walk.
My heart is overwhelmed with dread.

What’s that, I can’t believe my eyes!
My dad is running up to me!
In shock, I stop and stand and wait.
My tear-filled eyes can barely see.

Although I haven’t said a word,
I feel Dad’s kisses on my face.
His arms are tight around my neck.
I’m blessed and humbled by his grace.

“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20

A delightful re-visit with this familiar Bible story! I love the smooth as a ribbon rhythm and rhyme you've so skillfully woven here! I enjoyed the contemporary touch you've given to the telling too! Thank you, dear poet!

I enjoyed the glimpse into the prodigal son's thoughts via your excellent poem.
