TITLE: To Change Eternity
By Linda Watson Owen

In rags I stand before the gates of vast eternity.
I shudder as my empty hands hurl hell’s dread curse at me.
All of creation spews my name into the timeless maze
that holds all low and filthy things of every earthly age.

I shrink in shame before the glow of God’s great righteous realm.
My self-filled life accuses me. My sin now overwhelms.
Each thought, each searching, panicked quest that my mind tries to make
is helpless to escape the end, the terror of my fate.

The eyes of Heaven and of earth all sentence me to fear,
to weakness, and to nothingness. I know my time is near.
One last step more and I will be inside eternity,
and time will fade into the blaze of banished memory.

In tears I wilt upon my knees and cry out to the Lord.
“Oh, what a cursed fool I’ve been! Hell should be my reward!
I am unclean. I have no claim on Heaven’s favored rest,”
and lower, to the ground I fall and clutch my aching chest.

Then suddenly, dear Jesus stands! The Lord Himself before
this trembling heap of worthless earth that writhes upon the floor.
No words have I, as dumb I lie prostrate before the King,
and then I sense a tender Warmth. Oh, what a glorious thing!

Like flowing rivers warmed with sun, I feel a Heavenly glow,
I hear the King of Glory say, “Arise, be bold, and go!”
I do not understand these words, nor where the Voice now stands,
but as I open tear washed eyes, I look upon my hands.

They are not mine, but His instead. The scars are clear to see.
“Arise,” He once again commands as I stand to my feet.
But these feet too are pierced with scars belonging just to Him,
and then I realize that He has taken me within.

His Heart now beats within my breast. His mind is healing mine.
New eyes and ears replace the old with sights and sound sublime.
His melody now swells within this mouth that cursed before.
I stand amazed and purified, immersed within the Lord!

Oh, how can mortal words describe this oneness with the King?
How can mere utterance convey the True Life that He brings?
He walks me back into time’s realm and says, “There’s much to do.
This world awaits with souls now lost whose fate depends on you.”

The Lord speaks peace into my heart and says, “You must be bold.
Obey my Voice, and you will bring My sheep into My fold.
Think not of all that held you back from being one with Me.
A Holy boldness now I give. Go change eternity!”

"Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness
in the day of judgment: for as He is, so are we in this world."
I John 4:17 KJV

WoW! A powerful, well-written poem, packed with meaning. Your title (and last line) are perfect.

"All of creation spews my name into the timeless maze
that holds all low and filthy things of every earthly age."

You created a magnificent vehicle in this poem to tell this story. How I love to see this poetic use of language! Fantastic!

There are so many wonderful lines here in this poem of meeting the king and being made ready by Him for eternity with Him. I was blessed by the words. I loved the feeling described of "tender warmth."
This is one to read again anad again.

Just amazing. I was going to pick a favorite line - but they are all a blessing. Excellent.

Truly inspired verse! You already had me on a beautiful ride, when I read: "...and then I realize that He has taken me within..." At that point, your piece moved from inspired to sublime! It's no easy task to pull off the complexity of your rhyme & meter, but add the depth, the mystery of what you're so skillfully expressing, and WOW!

I love how this poem builds and that you worked in the topic in two different ways. We see ourselves in this poem and we're reminded from where we've come as well as our responsibility to share Him. The last line is awesome.

For me, this is a winner. I am speechless and that is rare. There just are no words to describe the AWE I feel after reading this. There was lots of prayer that went before this one, I believe....

Ahhh ... yes, I've been waiting for inspired Linda O. poetry!

Wow and double wow! The reader holds their breath through out and then breathes a deep satisfying sigh.

I love your title...and the challenge for each of us.

Dressing your MC "in rags" is a great picture of our good works that we often try to bring to the Lord.

This line "this trembling heap of worthless earth that writhes upon the floor" is a perfect description of mankind (whether they/we admit it or not) and evokes such emotion.

Absolutely beautiful!

Wow - this could only be written by a person truly and wholly convicted to spread the word of Christ. As God has touched you, you have in turn touched others.
Wonderful writing.
