"Defendant, do you promise,
To tell the truth and nothing more?
"I do" I said. "I'm sure" I said,
"I didn't break the law",
The prosecutor answered,
"I think that you're a liar",
And as the court all held their breath,
He named the crime; "Desire".

The witnesses, aligned, maligned,
They blamed and they denounced,
I waited for a strong defence,
My lawyer never pounced,
He sat there rather meekly,
Then gave a little cough,
"Defence will rest". I'm done for!
The prosecution finished off,

"If it pleases you, Your Honour,
The defendant in this court,
Is charged with crimes most heinous,
And your judgment now is sought".
"The witnesses have all confirmed,
The prosecutions claim,
This man is guilty of Desire,
And now must face his shame".

The magistrate adjusted,
His robes, and then he spoke,
"I've considered all the evidence,
And much of it's a joke".
"I've consulted dictionaries,
Before I grant you your petition,
Consider as I read for you,
Desires definition".

"Desire; To aspire,
To covet or To crave,
To want or wish or long for,
e.g. Aladdin's Cave,
To set ones heart on what one lacks,
To yearn or hanker after".
Then the judge said something,
That reduced the court to laughter.

"Desire seems to me to be,
A thing to be admired,
It's my belief that in this room,
Desire is required".
"I wish that lawyers told the truth,
I want honesty admired,
My heart is set on doing right,
And justice is Desired".

The judge continued musing,
"Can Desire be all bad?
Rather it must be the thing,
For which Desire had been had."
"Example. I Desire my wife,
It is a proper thing,
But mark my words, if you do,
I'll consider it a sin".

The prosecutor hung his head,
He had no smart reply,
I had no charge to answer to,
His case had gone awry,
So I was freed to walk away,
No blame to be apportioned,
But as I stepped down from the dock,
His Honour sternly cautioned;

"Desire, far from mortal sin,
Should truly be embraced,
But passion is a gift fromGod,
And must be rightly placed."
"Be sure to set your goals with care,
Be humble, kind and wise,
Then let your fire burn brightly,
Go for a Nobel Prize".

This was a good poem and an interesting take on the subject. Good moral in the end, too.

The ease with which you penned these lines is excellent. A timely and approprite message couched in readable and rhyming verse!
