Winter dulled our senses.
Every day, we woke to dead brown grass and dirty snow.
And then one morning
Spring, defying Winter’s hold,
crept in and with thin rays of sun,
drew out sweet breaths of hyacinth,
and splashes of bright daffodils.
Summer now comes bursting onto the stage,
and pushs Spring aside with bugle blasts.
The rain soaked grass grows thick and shaggy green,
Buried bulbs, responding to the call,
burst up through winter weary soil.
Tall spears of iris, standing at attention,
lift their purple buds
near lily clumps and feathered poppy leaves.
The children flip flop out the door into the sun,
with thoughts of summer freedom
shining on their faces.
I laugh with them,
my heart lifting with the joy
of you, awakening stronger every day,
loosing the chilly grip of weakness
and moving into health again.
I hear your voice and turn,
thanking my God for healing you
and for the strength of love
that flows between us
bringing light and warmth to each new day.
