Sometimes when the wind stills to calm the surface of the lake, I’m overcome with confidence: I can swim forever. The first five minutes of a distance swim can be challenging, but with good conditions my breathing steadies and matches the gait of my strokes and … I’m unstoppable.
God authors a similar inner calm - an environment offering practical insights for the long haul - when I ask Him for wisdom and then believe whole-heartedly He will deliver it. Because of this gift, I can be energized and enabled to operate as a whole, functional person.
When the lake froths with white caps, I don’t even consider marathon swims. Waves push and shove my body off balance, water stings my sinuses, and I tire almost immediately. Bad conditions spell failure.
In similar manner, I may choose unwisely to be crippled by doubt. In such a situation I thrash inwardly as a flighty, fractured soul tossed by opinions rather than truth.
Lord, I want my faith in You to be active rather than passive, so I ask You for enabling wisdom. Alleviate doubts that only waste time and effort. I want to achieve Your purpose, which requires Your insight. Thank you for promising to share Your wisdom generously. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“If any of you lacks wisdom he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” James 1:5-8
